July 1

7/01
20 miles (896 to 916)
The day started with miles and miles of gentle downhill. The terrain was nice but not spectacular as we passed through forests with occasional vistas. As we approached red's meadow, a popular spot the get off the trail and catch the shuttle to mammoth, we saw a white pop up canopy tent. We passed slowly scanning for food and familiar faces when a nice white haired man asked, are you thru hikers? Would you like a sandwich? Yes!
We ate chips and fruit and sandwiches courtesy of the forest service and pacific crest trail association  volunteer trail crew. We decided to skip going to mammoth since we had just taken so much time off the trail.
We took an alternate route today that passes through a national monument, the devils postpile. Hexagonal basalt pilars rise straight out of the earth. It was pretty neat and a popular tourist destination so we got to do some good people watching and throw out our trash.
We gained a ridge at the end of the day giving us great views of the thunderheads surrounding us that we thankfully, somehow missed.
