5/31
23 miles (592 to 615)
We got up early and were hiking by 6:30. After a few punchy climbs we re entered the forest (hooray!) and reached the next spring 10 miles away by 10:30. We filtered water and ate lunch consisting of salami, polenta, and tortillas among good company, cow poop, and buzzing flies. We hiked out a few miles and sat out the heat again, finding a shaded spot under a fir tree.  Around 2:30 the flies found us so we hiked the 5 miles to the next spring. We loaded up here, max capacity, it is 43 miles to the next reliable water source.  Tired and really not looking forward to hiking with such heavy loads, we headed out into the night. The more we hike when it's cool, the less water we need. We set up camp at 11, exhausted but hydrated.
This is an indication of how much I enjoy night hiking
