6/06
18 miles (663 Joshua tree spring to mile 681)
The miles were slow going today. It felt like we were moving along at a pretty good clip but never really went anywhere. The terrain was very pretty, dramatic mountains surrounded by thunderheads. We hid twice from rain showers. After the first clap of thunder heard while way up high on a ridge, I moved with a speed clay said he'd never seen before. Luckily, they passed fairly quickly, we didn't get too wet, and I didn't get hit by lightning. During the first cell we hid under a rock overhang just large enough for the two of us and our packs. The second rain came as we ate our dinner, the delicious but intestinal turmoil inducing chili Mac and beef. We grabbed all our gear and hid beneath a pine tree.
We were hoping to get a little closer to Kennedy meadows, we need to buy a few more snacks at the store and it closes at 5 so we might not make it until Monday morning. Between our slow going the last two days and sleeping in today I think we will be there a full day later than we originally expected. Oh well! We will just have to buy another days worth of food and if we can time it right, a burger!
