July 27

7/27
13 miles (1377 to 1390)
Visiting with Ryan and Mary was wonderful. We scarfed down a burrito in the dark when they arrived last night, slept with dahlia, and got up this morning to go out to breakfast. It was great. They also saved our butts by taking us food shopping in the next town 20 miles away. Our resupply box hadn't arrived and we no longer have time to wait for them, so we went to the store and bought 5 days worth of food. Sorry to have hijacked your morning.
Clay and I were pooped today. We hiked a few miles to subway cave, the last water for 30 miles. We loaded up on water and in procrastination, went through a walk through the lava tube. We are Happy that we took the time, it was a cool walk underground through a half mile hollow tube that once carried lava.
With 5 liters of water each and a full resupply, our packs felt impossibly heavy. We labored up the hill to the dry stretch called hat creek rim thinking back to all the long water carries we had in Southern California. They are so awful, I don't know how we kept going through them all. This should be the last long one and for that I am thrilled. We will try to push to burney falls state park tomorrow to start making up for our short day today.
